SANCCOB, a leading marine conservation non-profit organization, seeks to employ an Assistant Marine Ranger to join their dynamic team. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining a high quality service to SANCCOB and CapeNature by upholding their conservation mandates.

The position will be based at Stony Point in Betty’s Bay to carry out conservation related duties that will contribute to the overall protection of the Endangered African penguin and other seabirds.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide support and assistance to the CapeNature Conservation Manager in all activities related to Protected Area Management, specifically in the African penguin colony at Stony Point Nature Reserve.
  • Assist CapeNature in managing the African penguin colony, both inside and outside Stony Point NR.
  • Field surveys: baseline data collection and ecological monitoring, assist with research projects and report writing.
  • Provide assistance with environmental education and interpretation.
  • Perform supporting supervisory and administrative duties.
  • Maintenance of related infrastructure and equipment.
  • Perform required after-hour colony management duties.

Requirements:

  • Minimum Grade 12
  • Minimum 2 years working experience in the environmental or conservation field with a passion for seabirds and marine conservation.
  • A valid Code-B driver’s licence.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, after hours and perform standby duties.
  • Willingness to work infield at times during inclement weather conditions.
  • Physical ability to perform related marine ranger duties.
  • Willingness to undergo related training as scheduled, attend meetings from time to time, and provide feedback as required.
  • No criminal record.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Presentation skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to operate well in a team.

Recommendation:

  • A related tertiary qualification would be advantageous.
